Suwon Samsung Bluewings booked their place in the second round of the 2011 AFC Champions League with a 3-1 victory over Sydney FC at Suwon World Cup Stadium.

Despite Sydney’s need for victory, Suwon started brightly and almost took the lead in the 15th minute when a long, floated free-kick by Park Jong-jin from just past the halfway line found Kwak Hee-joo near the penalty spot but the visitors were relieved to see the central defender’s looping header bounce off the top of the crossbar.

Just as Sydney were looking more comfortable, albeit without troubling Jung Sung-ryong in the Suwon goal, they fell behind on the half-hour. A free-kick was curled behind the Sydney backline for Ha to nod home from the edge of the six-yard box.

Five minutes after the restart, Suwon doubled their advantage. Neretljak curled a free-kick – awarded just outside the area – over the Sydney wall and into the unguarded left side of the net.

Sydney immediately pulled a goal back. Substitute Rhyan Grant broke free down the left and his crossed was not dealt with by the Suwon defence. The ball bounced through to Cazarine, who slotted the ball past Jung from close range.

The goal gave Sydney belief that they could get something from the game and soon after, the Brazilian was forcing a diving stop from Jung with a well-placed header as Suwon were pushed onto the back foot.

Sydney almost drew level with 15 minutes remaining. Nick Carle brought the ball out of defence from a corner and found Andrew Durante with a fine pass. Through on goal, Durante chose to pass to Grant just inside the area allowing Jung to dive and intercept.

The contest was settled in style with 10 minutes to go. Yeom, introduced as a substitute, picked up the ball on the right corner of the penalty area and curled a low shot into the far corner that give keeper Liam Reddy no chance.
