23 April 2009 No Comment

Brazilian striker Fernando Baiano has denied Al Ittihad a win and a place in the last 16 of the Asian Champions League and kept Al Jazira’s hopes well alive with an equaliser in Saudi Arabia.

The strike gave Al Jazira a 1-1 draw but still leaves Al Ittihad on top. Al Jazira are sitting in third position.

The two-time Asian champions had a great opportunity to seal their passage into the 2nd stage of the competition, especially after they took a 50th-minute 1 – 0 lead through Osama Al Harbi.

With 20 minutes remaining, however, Baiano struck.

Umm Salal battled for a draw at Esteghlal that leaves them in 2nd place with four points clear and only two games remaining.

It was a must win game for the Iranians. They took the lead just before half-time. However, with 20 minutes remaining, Saud Ghanem earned what could be a vital point for the Qataris.

Siavash Akbarpour had a late goal disallowed for Esteghlal, who are now virtually saying goodbye to the tournament for 2009.
