Mday 4 – ACL Group E Wrap

23 April 2009 No Comment

Japanese side Nagoya Grampus took a major step toward securing their place in round 2of the ACL with a 1-0 win away against the Newcastle Jets.

Nagoya was more incisive at Energy Australia Stadium compared to their previous meeting, taking the lead during the second half through Ogawa Yoshizumi after having threatened the Jets goal on a number of occasions.

The Jets themselves created plenty of opportunities, coming close through the likes of central defender Angelo Costanzo and missing a second half penalty that was won and taken by substitute Sash Petrovski.

Although the performance was positive, they now must win their next 2 games to have any chance of preogressing to the knockout stages of the 2009 tournament.

Ulsan Hyundai now occupy second spot – two points behind league leaders Nagoya, who have eight points – the Korean team has resurrected their campaign with 2 straight victories against the Chinese outfit.

Their latest came away from home courtesy of Oh Jang-Eun’s, in a match deemed his side’s “most important” by manager Kim Ho-Gon.

It is a stark contrast from the much critised decision to send out a second string side as against Newcastle in their second Champions League match; they are now favourites to qualify from the group and will need to travel to Japan and host the Australians again before the group stage’s end.
