Ulsan Hyundai coach Kim Ho-gon praised the contribution of goal scorer Oh Jang-eun, who once again ruined Beijing Guoan’s night as his 70th minute header consigned the Chinese side to a 1-0 defeat on Wednesday.

Oh scored the only goal in the previous Group E meeting between the two sides on April 7 and was on target again at the Worker’s Stadium as he leapt above a sleepy Beijing defence to head home a Hyun Young-min free-kick.

“He played excellently, he was very good,” said Kim.

“He has recovered well from an injury last year and he now plays a very important role in the team.”

The Ulsan boss was relieved to come away from the hard-fought encounter with a victory, which sent his side up to second in the group with six points, two behind table toppers Nagoya Grampus with two games remaining.

Meanwhile, Beijing Guoan boss Lee Jang-soo was left to rue his side’s squandered opportunities as they slipped to third in the group, four points behind Nagoya and two adrift of Ulsan.

“The first half of the match was exciting, and both sides played physical, skilful football,” said the Korean.

“We had some good chances near the end, but we didn’t score.”

Lee was looking for an improved showing from his players following what he described as a ‘shameful’ performance in their previous tie with Ulsan.

But his plans were upset by injuries to key players including Huang Bowen who was stretchered off in the first half.

“Now it looks like we’ll struggle to win the group, our situation is very difficult now,” Lee added.
