South Korean champions Suwon Samsung Bluewings stunned their Japanese counterparts Kashima Antlers with a 4-1 win in the opening match in Group G of the Asian Champions League.

Two goals late in the first half put Suwon in control and Kashima never looked like getting back into the game.

Former Chinese international defender Li Weifeng fired home his first goal for the Korean club just before the break and there was still enough time for Brazilian striker Eduardo to volley home a fine second.

Suwon never relinquished their grip on the game and fully deserved to extend their lead.

With eight minutes remaining, Hong Sun-hak exchanged a one-two with Seo Dong-hyun and then fired home a low shot from inside the area. Park Hyun-beom added a fourth before Kashima’s star striker Marquinhos grabbed a 92nd minute consolation.

In Group G’s other match, Shanghai Shenhua picked up three points by defeating Singapore Armed Forces winning 4-1 at the Hongkou Stadium.

Shanghai’s sailing perhaps wasn’t as smooth as the result suggests and at times, the team predicted to be the group’s whipping boys more than matched their Chinese opponents.

Hernan Barcos put the hosts ahead after 25 minutes with a penalty awarded after Hafiz Osman handled on the line.

The Singapore star was also red carded. Despite the double setback, the Warriors fought back and stunned their hosts with an equalizer just after the hour thanks to Johnny Wilkinson.

That joy was short-lived as Yu Tao restored Shanghai’s lead with 16 minutes remaining.

Yin Xifu sealed the win for with five minutes remaining and Barcos added his second and Shanghai’s fourth in the last minute.
