Mday 1 – ACL Group C

11 March 2009 No Comment

Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ittihad needed an injury-time winner from Moroccan striker Hicham Aboucherouane to defeat Esteghlal 2-1 in Group C of the Asian Champions League.

The two-time Asian champions had been a goal behind at home to the Iranian giants.

It all happened late in the game.

With 13 minutes remaining, Arash Borhani put the visitors ahead in Jeddah with a fine header.

Just three minutes later, Egyptian striker Emad Motaeb levelled for the hosts and with seconds remaining, Aboucherouane fired home an unstoppable shot from 30 yards.

There was an injury-time winner in Group C’s other match between Al Jazira of UAE and Qatar’s Umm Salal.

Bahrain international striker Ala’a Hubail fired home in the 93rd minute to give Umm Salal a 1-0.

It was a frustrating night for the hosts who dominated the game and saw Brazilian star Fernando Baiano miss a penalty.

Six months after announcing his comeback, Karim Bagheri again retired from the national team.
