Mday 1 – ACL Group E

10 March 2009 No Comment

Nagoya Grampus took control of Group E with a 3-1 win at Ulsan Hyundai Horang-I while Beijing Guoan also got off to a winning start by defeating Australian team Newcastle Jets 2-0.

At half-time, Nagoya were facing an uphill battle at the home of the South Koreans.

In an open first half, Cho Jin-soo swept Ulsan ahead after slack marking by the Japanese team allowed a corner to fall his way.

After the break, Dragan Stojkovic’s men moved up a gear to pick up a deserved win, though woeful defending from Ulsan certainly helped.

A floated cross from the left ten minutes after the break found Maya Yoshida completely unmarked close to goal and the midfielder headed home.

With 12 minutes remaining, new Brazilian signing Davi put Nagoya in front and soon after, in a carbon copy of Nagoya’s first goal, compatriot Magnum was left unmarked to head home from close range.

Beijing go second with a hard-fought 2-0 win at home to Newcastle Jets.

It was perhaps inevitable that the only goal of the game came from Joel Griffiths.

The talented striker is on loan to Beijing from the Australian team and the Jets had cause to regret that after just six minutes.

Du Wenhui sealed the win for the hosts in the dying minutes.
