Mday 1 – ACL Group H

10 March 2009 No Comment

J-League runners up and Group C favourites Kawasaki Frontale made the perfect start to their Asian Champions League campaign on Wednesday evening with a 1-0 home win over Tianjin Teda.

The Chinese Super League outfit – who finished fourth last season – were undone by a Renatinho goal, the 21 year-old Brazilian netting after just 16’ minutes.

That result puts the former ACL Quarter Finalists in outright first place in their group, courtesy of a scoreless draw between the Central Coast Mariners and Pohang Steelers.

Competing in their maiden Champions League campaign as one of two of Australia’s representatives in the competition this year, the Mariners produced an accomplished display against their more illustrious rivals.

Though the match could hardly be described as a classic, both sides competed well and had chances to win the game, Matt Simon missing a wonderful chance for the home side during the first half and Central Coast ‘keeper Danny Vukovic making a stunning late save to salvage a point for his side.

Next week, Pohang welcome Kawasaki to Korea and the Mariners travel to China to face Tianjin.
