Suwon Bluewings coach Cha Bum-kun was delighted with the performance he got from his young players as the Koreans battled back for a 2-1 victory over Shanghai Shenhua on Wednesday.

Due to injuries and fatigue, Cha was forced to start four players who had not started a game all season for Suwon.

But they all stepped up to the plate as Suwon hit back with goals from Lee Sang-ho and Bae Ki-jeong securing the three points after Yanko Valkanov had put Shanghai in the lead.

“I was so proud of our young players who used today as a chance to prove themselves in a difficult situation,” said Cha.

Suwon were able to survive a penalty scare in the 77th minute when Park Ho-jin saved from Hernan Barcos.

However, Cha felt that the penalty never should have been awarded.

“In Shanghai we had a good goal disallowed and today there were multiple occasions where the referee made mistakes against our side,” he added.

With the victory, Suwon have given themselves a great chance to reach their goal of making the knockout stages.

Suwon have nine points from four games, level with Japanese side Kashima Antlers.

“Our domestic record doesn’t look so good at the moment but our team can take pride in our level of play so far against the best teams in Asia,” added Cha.

The loss leaves Shanghai third in the group and means the Chinese side need to take maximum points from their two remaining games if they are to progress.
