Pohang Steelers coach Sergio Farias believes the Korea Republic side will qualify for the knockout stage of the AFC Champions League even though they were held to a goalless draw by Tianjin Teda.

The visitors dominated the Group H game at Tianjin Teda Stadium with Brazilian striker Denilson almost netting a winner 13 minutes from time as his long-range effort hit the post.

Although they failed to convert their chances, Pohang edged closer to the last 16 and are now four points ahead of Tianjin and Central Coast Mariners with two games to go.

“We will finish in second place in the group trailing the Japanese team (Kawasaki Frontale),” said the Brazilian coach.

Farias also singled out Tianjin’s former Italian international Damiano Tommasi for particular praise.

“Tommasi did a good job today in midfield and he created a lot of problems for us,” he added.

“He ran a lot in midfield and did well to stop us from organising efficient attacks but it was a good game and both teams displayed good skills.

Tianjin coach Zuo Shusheng admitted the draw effectively ended their hopes of reaching the knockout phase.

“It is the first time that Tianjin has competed in the ACL and I had fielded the strongest squad to battle for a victory,” said Zuo.

“It was a shame that we couldn’t please our fans on home soil but I believe my players have done their best.
